Wood has always been a medium of freedom for me. In part, because of its availability in my hometown of Detroit Michigan, where reclaimed oak, Maple, and walnut were easy to come by. However, that is only a small part of it. Its appeal, to me, is in its ever constant variety. No matter how much experience I have with a individual species, no board is the same as the next. Grain switch's direction and color varies, keeping me on my toes. Engaged.
For me that is the appeal. I enjoy each new lesson the tree brings. To be a part of its story, and usher it to its next chapter.
My goal is to create work that reflects that. Work that rhymes but never repeats. With as much character as the parent tree. This is something that is reflected in my process and my tool set. There is always room for the machine in my shop. However, the shaping requires the beautiful imprecision of hand.
